HRTM students spent the day in Omaha for inaugural summit

On September 9, 2019, 250 Hospitality, Restaurant, and Tourism Management and PGA Golf Management students boarded five coach buses and headed to Omaha for the inaugural UNL Hospitality Student Summit. The event, hosted by Andy Reetz, CEO and General Manager of Champion’s Run, and Ben Lorenzen, Chief Memory Officer at Champion’s Run, provided the opportunity for students to learn about hospitality in a private club environment. There was an array of amazing speakers from different country clubs throughout the United States.

Springer named CYAF Interim Chair

I am pleased to announce that Paul Springer has agreed to serve as the CYAF interim chair while we complete a national search. Paul has significant leadership experience given his time as interim associate dean and I am confident that he will maintain stability but will also help guide growth and achievement during the interim period. As chair, Paul will provide overall leadership for the Department of Child, Youth and Family Studies including the management of and the long-range planning for the unit.

Teacher Scholars Begin at UNL!

The inaugural cohort of the UNL Teacher Scholars Academy is officially underway! The Scholars moved-in to their residence hall and immediately started engaging in dialogue around topics such as community, purpose, ownership, and teamwork. This past weekend, the Scholars also participated in a challenge course through Campus Recreation where they learned to challenge themselves and rely on the support of their peers.

Michael Burton, assistant professor of practice in the Department of Textiles, Merchandising, and Fashion Design and his partners William Thomas, professor of history and Kwakiutl Dreher, associate professor of English and ethnic studies are making a new historical film.

Dr. Helen Raikes Awarded 2019 Louise Pound-George Howard Distinguished Career Award

Tuesday Sept. 3rd, the UNL Faculty Senate presented the Louise Pound-George Howard Distinguished Career Award to Dr. Helen Raikes. Dr. Raikes is a Willa Cather professor in Child, Youth and Family Studies. The Pound-Howard Award is given annually to a person(s) who has  demonstrated outstanding service and commitment to the University. Each year several nominees are submitted from across campus.

Sevier leads development of comprehensive cochlear implant services at Barkley Clinic

A year ago, Josh Sevier was in the beginning stages of establishing the Cochlear Implant Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Barkley Speech Language and Hearing Clinic. His vision for a team approach to providing cochlear implant services has now come to fruition, with eight cochlear implant activations completed at the Barkley Memorial Center and five more individuals in process to have surgery.

Campus parking rules change for football game days

Faculty and staff permit parking areas, including reserved, non-reserved and garages, are reassigned on home football game days.


Campus parking permit holders cannot park in standard assigned parking areas during game day preparation and activities. Parking areas close at 10 p.m. the night before a home game. Vehicles parked in violation of campus rules can be ticketed and towed.
