Lincoln Southwest teacher selected as 2018 Battey Award recipient

Lincoln Southwest High School English/journalism teacher Brandi Benson has been selected as the 2018 Frieda Battey Distinguished Educator Award, presented by the College of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Benson will receive the honor May 11 at a luncheon in Nebraska’s Memorial Union.

Jessica Horan, a May Nebraska graduate in family and consumer sciences education, nominated her former yearbook teacher for the Battey Award and says she thinks about Benson every week.

To say John Maag never expected to be speaking at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s graduate commencement ceremony last Friday would be a vast understatement. After all, Maag hadn’t even planned to go to college himself, let alone go on to earn three college degrees and spend his career mentoring future educators.

May 2018 graduate Q&As: Master's degrees

Q-and-As with Alyaa Aljeeb, Andrea Kremeier, Jett Mickelsen and Dana Todoruk, who will graduate with their master's degrees this weekend. Aljeeb is a Fulbright Scholar from Bahrain who will earn her master's in special education, while Kremeier, Mickelsen and Todoruk will each earn master's degrees in speech-language pathology.

May 2018 commencement spotlight: Macy Palmer

Macy Palmer will tell you that attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln was not so much a decision she made as it was the plan she had for life after high school all along. She was going to be a Husker, no questions asked. 

Palmer, a Lincoln native, also seemed destined to work with individuals with special needs, which is exactly what she will do after earning her bachelor’s degree in special education (7-12) Saturday during the university’s undergraduate commencement ceremony at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

May 2018 graduate Q&As: Bachelor's degrees

Q-and-As with Karlee Haecker, Elizabeth Hoffman, Letishia Lindhorst, Megan Poppert, Meghann Torchia and Ellie Watkins, who will graduate this weekend. Haecker and Torchia will receive bachelor's degrees in special education, while Hoffman, Lindhorst, Poppert and Watkins will earn their bachelor's degrees in communication sciences & disorders/speech-language pathology.

CEHS shines at 2018 Research Fair

Students from the College of Education and Human Sciences represented the college in outstanding fashion at the 2018 UNL Spring Research Fair April 10 and 11 at the Nebraska Union. The annual event featured more than 250 undergraduate research posters, six undergraduate creative exhibits and more than 150 graduate research posters. More than 400 students participated over the course of the two-day fair.
