Helen and Ron Raikes honored with Abbott Award

Helen Raikes, Willa Cather Professor of Child, Youth and Family Studies (CYAF), and her late husband, former Nebraska State Senator Ron Raikes, will be recognized Oct. 10 with the Grace Abbott Award from the Nebraska Children and Families Foundation. The honor will be presented at the Nebraska Children and Family Foundation's Changemakers luncheon at the Embassy Suites in La Vista, Nebraska.

HRTM's Jha invited to lecture in Thailand

Dipra Jha, assistant professor of practice in Hospitality, Restaurant and Tourism Management, traveled to Thailand Sept. 10-17 to deliver invited lectures on innovation in the tourism and hospitality industries. The lecture events were hosted by two of the country’s most prestigious institutions, the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), Thailand’s top university for graduate education at their campuses in Bangkok and Phuket; and by Prince of Songkla University in Phuket.

Celebration of Youth Day

The annual exhibition “Celebration of Youth XXIV” continues through September 30th at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery. As with all twenty-three preceding iterations of the exhibition, this one showcases the work of youth from around the state, who competed at the Nebraska State Fair in the 4-H areas of Clothing, Home Environment, and Quilt Quest.

Husker junior follows dad’s example in pursuit of special education career

Evan Lindblad grew up watching his dad positively impact students’ lives and decided at a young age he wanted to do that too. 

“My dad has always been my role model. I’ve just always looked up to him,” Lindblad said. “For the longest time, I’ve wanted to be just like my dad. My grandma also worked with special education students, so I guess you could say it kind of runs in the family.”

CEHS Dinner & Dialogue registration deadline Oct. 20

CEHS Dinner & Dialogue, formerly the student research fair, will be held from 4-7 p.m., Nov. 3 at the Nebraska Memorial Union on City Campus. Dinner & Dialogue consists of inter-departmental roundtable conversations followed by dinner. The goal of the event is authentic dialogue about the work of CEHS situated within a larger societal context. The overarching question that is intended to transcend departmental boundaries: What does it mean to create, lead, access, nourish, develop, prepare, and/or commune in 2017?
